Abuse and overuse of prescription drugs is a major public health issue in the United States, with death rates tripling in the last 20 years. The greatest harm results from overuse of opioid drugs. Several approaches are being taken to address the issue of overuse, including re-education of prescribers, education of patients regarding the harms of these drugs, expecting patients to assume more responsibility for their care through opioid prescription contracts, and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs.
PQA Statin Use in Diabetes (SUPD) Measure Submitted to the National Quality Forum (NQF) Cardiovascular Project for Endorsement
PQA has submitted the Statin Use in Persons with Diabetes (SUPD) measure in response to the National Quality Forum's (NQF) request for cardiovascular measures. This is the third phase of the NQF Cardiovascular Endorsement project that seeks to identify and endorse new cardiovascular measures.
PQA Comments on the Medicaid State and Managed Care Proposed Regulation
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed the first broad-ranging changes to the rules governing the federal-state Medicaid program since 2002 and invited comments. PQA believes the proposed Medicaid rules to modernize and strengthen the Medicaid and CHIP programs offer many opportunities to improved care for beneficiaries.

PQA Measure Development Update: August 2015
The new PQA measure development process for 2015 is working well and the progress being made by the Measure Development Teams (MDTs) and the Stakeholder Advisory Panels (SAPs) on new measure concepts is significant. The MDTs and TF have been meeting monthly via conference call and the SAPs are scheduled to meet for the third time during the first two weeks of August.

PQA's Second Fellow Joins CVS Health
Maria Scarlatos, PQA's second fellow, has sailed on to Woonsocket, Rhode Island where she will join CVS Health as a Medicare Part D Star Ratings Advisor. In her new role she will serve as a Star Ratings subject matter expert responsible for optimizing Star measure performance and coordinating improvement initiatives.
